Q: How come the archive is 1Mb when the NewMail program is only 57Kb?
Because the archive also contains necessary dll's and an installation program. If you have Mfc40.dll installed already and you don't need an installation program you can download a smaller archive from the NewMail homepage.

Q: How do I make NewMail only check for mail while I am connected?
Simply uncheck both Connect as needed and Permanent connection on the Internet Connection tab.

Q: The "Check mail now..." menu item is always grayed out. How can I enable it?
This menu item becomes available when you have either checked Permanent Connection on the Internet Connection tab or you have selected a connection and entered a connection login name.

Q: How can I make NewMail start Netscape mail?
Use the Browse button and locate the netscape.exe file on your computer. Select open in the file dialog and then append -mail to the string. The edit field should now contain something similar to:
c:\program files\netscape\navigator\program\netscape.exe -mail

Q: How can I make NewMail start Microsoft Internet Mail?
Right click on the Internet Mail's shortcut icon and select Properties from the menu. Go to the Shortcut tab, right click the Target: edit field and select Select All, then Copy. Paste this string into the NewMail Settings window by right clicking on the Mail Reader edit field and selecting Paste from the menu.

Q: NewMail forgets messages if I don't read them as soon as they arrive?
NewMail only reports the number of new messages arrived since last check. If you want NewMail to show the old messages as well you should check the Message on screen option on the Notification tab. NewMail will now display a window containing all the new messages and when new messages arrive they will be added to the window...

Q: How can I download the sound files on the NewMail homepage?
Simply right click the link and select Save Link As... or Save Target As... from the pop up menu.

Q: Why doesn't NewMail download my messages?
Because NewMail would then have to support every e-mail mailbox format in the world and that would increase its size. Besides, NewMail is an e-mail notifier not an e-mail reader.

Q: NewMail doesn't show any headers in the notification window. What is wrong?
You should uninstall NewMail, then install NewMail 2.0 (the full version with the installation program). You can then replace the executable with the latest beta.

Q: I sometimes get a warning from other applications when using NewMail. What is wrong?
This can happen with all programs that access your mailbox and it is totally harmless. The POP3 protocol only allows one program to read your mailbox at any given time and this will lock out the other programs. Many e-mail programs allow the user to supress warning messages like this.

Q: How do I use e with NewMail?
Download and install e. Open the NewMail settings window and click on the Notification tab. Click on Browse... button in the Mail reader group and locate e on your system. Click on the Open button in the filedialog. The full path and name of the e executable will now be inserted into NewMail. Check Automatic launch and close the NewMail settings window. Locate and start e on your system, press right mouse button inside the e window and select Settings... from the popup menu. Click on the Browse... button in the Animation group and locate the rotating e animation, then click the Open button. Click on the Browse... button in the Program group and locate your e-mail reader, then click the Open button. e will now start your e-mail reader when you left click inside the window or when you press enter.

Q: How do I make NewMail establish the PPP connection in the background without showing any windows?
The connection process is handled entirely by the OS and has nothing to do with NewMail. To minimize all windows that might appear during the connection process, you should check the Start terminal screen minimized option in the connection properties. If you haven't already, you should also download and install the ISDN 1.1 update for Windows95 from Microsoft's homepage. It offers better control over the connection process (such as hiding the Connect to dialogbox etc.)
